The Challenge

This inconsistency puzzled many engineers until they realized that long cables used for 4-20mA loops acted as antennas, picking up electromagnetic interference (EMI). As these signals reached the PLC input card, drift in the readings became evident. The physics behind this issue is straightforward: current flowing through a wire induces an electrical field around it, and long wires amplify this effect, making them susceptible to external noise.
