Fix Noisy Thermocouple Readings with a 4-20mA Transmitter

Fix Noisy Thermocouple Readings with a 4-20mA Transmitter

Temperature transmitter solutions for demanding industrial applications. The DR4401 series delivers reliable performance.

The Challenge

The trend looked like a sawtooth. The process was steady, yet the readings were erratic. This phenomenon is common when using thermocouples to measure temperature due to their output being millivolts. Millivolt signals are particularly susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI), leading to noise and distortion in the signal, which manifests as the sawtooth pattern on the display.

To address this issue, we implemented a solution with the DR4401 system, converting the thermocouple output directly at the sensor head into a 4-20mA current signal. This conversion ensures that the signal is immune to EMI, providing stable and accurate readings regardless of environmental noise. The result? Reliable data collection without the interference that plagued previous systems.
